What Gets in the Way of Women Entrepreneurs Making Money?

Do we get in our own way on purpose? Sometimes, I wonder.
In my newsletter, The Rhino Wrestler yesterday, I was thinking about the distinction we must make between activity and progress. It is so easy to stay very busy, but the question is:
"What are we busy about?"
There is no problem filling every available minute of the day with tasks, but, are we convincing ourselves that they are both urgent and important. That would be quite hard to do if we are avoiding making important telephone calls to further our businesses in favor of re-arranging folders on our computers....if we are honest with ourselves, that is!
Denial is the only perfect system. Think about it! If we are in denial that we are just filling time with activity, we will continue to happily do that and justify our behavior. If we wake up and smell the herbal tea, we'll notice that we may be very busy but we're getting nowhere towards the bank! Isn't that why we're in business: to make a contribution and make money doing it?
I hope so, because, unless you are independently wealthy and able to contribute your time, energy and expertise to altruistic causes, you are doing what you are doing to create a life AND a livelihood.
So, play on your own team today. Examine if what you are doing is activity, or true progress. How? If you cannot find what you're doing on your business plan, then, don't do it!
Don't have a business plan? Then, let's work together through coaching to get you to the place where you have a real business first! That's the fastest way to align who you are and what you do with your values, vision, beliefs and purpose. Visit my website below now.

Walking in Another's Shoes

© Rhoberta Shaler, PhD
When I think of walking in another person's shoes, I think of a call to compassion. To walk in their shoes is to try to imagine what it is like to see the world from their perspective.
Yesterday, I was talking with a coaching client and I had another take on that phrase. I was walking in her shoes, not only seeing and understanding her perspective, but realizing that I knew it so well because her shoes were ones I had painfully outgrown. I realized the difficulties inherent in attempting to help her see what I can see from the this vantage point to which my new shoes have taken me. And, to do so so that she could consider and choose to outgrow her current ones. I guess that's what my coaching is:
- It is helping clients to identify their destination clearly, not from old sotires, other people's expectations or enticing marketing messages, but from the deepest desires of their hearts to make a unique contribution to the world.
- It is walking with them until they see their unique destination with clarity and they identify it, and identify with it, as theirs.
- It is helping them to draw a map that takes them through the necessary territory to reach their goal, while simultaneously teaching them map-building skills that avoid winding detours and tempting parking places.
- It is sharing from my own journey to remember the humanity involved. None of us knows much until we have experienced it, learned from it, and moved forwards.
- It is walking at a pace just in front of them to make the path safe, but never too far ahead that they feel they cannot catch up.
- It is the willingness to shed light on dark places that may cause clients to hide their eyes and want to retreat into familiar places that have not brought them what they want, but, they are at least that, familiar. There are times when neither the familiar, nor the new, feel safe--and that has to be OK in order to grow.
- It is risking telling the truth as I see it: refusing to turn the light off and insisting they open their eyes. This is not always a comfortable time for either of us.
So, one thing I know: walking in another's shoes can be an uncomfortable experience. It can be painful, risky, and frustrating. It also can remind me that everything I offer to my clients is learning I must remember myself. Coaching has great value for both of us.
We must keep walking together.
I wish you well.

It's the Economy!

© Rhoberta Shaler, Phd
"It's the economy," she told me when I asked about her business, "It's taking away my business!"
And, she was serious about that. To her it felt as though failing was inevitable. The downward slide had no brake holds. The only result was disaster.
I asked her if she wanted to talk a bit about her business. For a moment, she wavered, obviously thinking there was not even any point. I understand. This has happened more than once in the past few weeks. She took a huge breath in, let out a sign and said, "Why not?" in that way that let me know she felt it was already dead and buried.
It all began in a depressive tone until I asked her why she had chosen what she wanted to do in life. Slowly, the sun began to come out. She remembered why and she spoke of it with increasing passion. She lit up.
"Ah! It's not so dead." I thought to myself.
"Are you still interested in offering that to your market?" I asked.
"Sure, but what's the point? It's over."
"Actually, no. It's not over. It seems it needs re-thinking, re-planning, re-focusing and re-working, but, it's not dead." There was a flicker of interest.
"Really? You think there is hope."
"Yes, I do. If you have passion, patience, purpose and persistence, we can re-work it!"
Now, she was interested and ready to re-invest in her vision. How about you? Are you thinking your business is ready for a Requiem? It's worth thinking it through, rather than burying it alive. I'm helping this women and I would be happy to talk with you.
There is much you can do to keep your dream alive. Refuse to live in denial about your business. Find out how you can cash your reality check and make it pay now.

When Women Gather...

© Rhoberta Shaler, PhD
When women gather, good things happen!
It happened again on Saturday when fourteen women joined me for a free teleseminar for women entrepreneurs. And, it was wonderful!
Why is it so fine when women gather? Women talk. Women share. Women collaborate. Women are not afraid to ask questions...or, directions. So, there is a worthwhile exchange of information and encouragement. The topic on Saturday was Eight Essential Advantages Women Have & How to Use Them to Accelerate Your Business. Every women needs to know these, and those fourteen women were ready to hear them and immediately use them.
Now, of course, men are wonderful, amazing and necessary. There is no question. And, many men have accessed their feminine side as we have embraced our masculine sides. It's not about what men aren't. It's about what women are!
Are you using the advantages you have? Are you enjoying the company of women in business? I invite you to open your heart, mind, arms...and house...to other women in business. Collaboration is the fastest way to business success. You question that? Have you ever fed two hundred starving scouts breakfast? It takes ten women collaborating...and talking and laughing...to do it on time. (And, , that doesn't mean men can't do it too, so, relax!) I rest my case.
What advantages do you think you have? I'd love to hear your ideas. Just hit the comment button below.

Women Entrepreneurs Have Eight Essential Advantages

© Rhoberta Shaler, PhD
In the world of business, it is essential to use every advantage you have that moves your business forward while maintaining your integrity. There is, of course, a big difference between having an advantage and taking advantage. I do not advocate the latter!
As women we actually have eight advantages that work in our favor, if we work them. Strangely enough, many women don't. That's too bad, because it is so wise to put your strengths to work for you. Why wouldn't you do the very things that can grow and maintain your business?
I want to give you an opportunity to hear these eight essentials AND to talk about them. So, I'm inviting you to go to the website, ForWomenEntrepreneurs.com and click on the orange link in the right column. You can't miss it. This teleseminar is free and it happens every month at least once. The next one is March 7 at 9:30 AM Pacific time for ninety minutes. You can sign up right there at the orange link.
I've been in the entrepreneurial world for a whole lot of years, even when I also was an employee and pursuing my businesses in the evenings and on weekends. I know what women can do and I know how we think. Not only because I am one, but because I've worked with so many clients and I've learned what their resistances and obstacles to success are.
So, come along to the teleseminar. You can also register at http://www.free8.eventbrite.com/
Ask your questions here, too. I'll do my best to give you a detailed answer.
To your success!

And, away we go!

© Rhoberta Shaler, PhD
Are you a woman on the move with a mission? That's you if you are a motivated, enthusiastic, focused, targeted, entrepreneurial woman. And, this blog is for you. I thought it best to tell you a little about myself, my journey and what I now do so that we could get acquainted.
If those adjectives above don't quite describe you at this point in your life and career, I can help. I work with women entrepreneurs to lead them to accurately align their life and livelihood with who they are and what their purpose is. That's why I'm so excited about this new blog. Here I can share ideas and insights that may be helpful to you in your quest for success on your own terms. If you have a question, be sure to immediately send it along using the "comment" link below.
As a psychologist, consultant and coach, I made the journey From Employee to Entrepreneur thirteen years ago. Up until then, while I raised my three children, I lived with the assurance of a regular paycheck every month. These days, some folks are losing their jobs. This is the time to become an entrepreneur. You can read my story here.
I was recently at a memorial service where a woman told me that she had been laid off after thirty-six years with a major international telephone company. To her, it was both a disaster and an unbelievable shock. When I told her that her best next step might be to harness her expertise, develop a business plan and start selling her services back to that company as a consultant, she was shocked again. It had never occurred to her to become an entrepreneur.
It's a really big step to create a pay day all on your own. It requires a different mindset, new strategies and an entirely different way of prioritizing your time, talent, experience and finances. When you visit ForWomenEntrepreneurs.com , you will see that there are classes there to guide you to make those changes in a direct, thoughtful way. You won't have to wander through the marketing maze where everyone with a product or service...especially those with really high price tags...is targeting you!
I take my clients From Idea to Implementation , from where they are to where they can create the life and livelihood that is in alignment with who they are, what they value, their expertise and experience and their beliefs and purpose. If that is not the approach, you are simply chasing dollars. And, that does NOT work!
One of the important benefits I offer my clients is to learn to dissect the marketing language that is coming at them. Some clients have learned through bitter experience that that a quick, immediate promise of effortless wealth is just marketing language and highly unlikely to create the return on investment promised. Although some clients came to me with a few wounds from marketing wars, they soon developed the discernment to choose only what was right for them, in alignment with their business and marketing plans. No impulse decisions. That can be a money trap for entrepreneurs.
So, that's a bit about me and some links to learn more. Now, I'm really interested in you, and how I can help. I hope you'll write your comments and question, so that we can also have a dialogue.
Here's to your success.
